Growth of Laminaria abyssalis (Phaeophyta) at different nitrate concentrations

Abstract

Young sporophytes of Laminaria abyssalis Joly et Oliveira Filho (Laminariales, Phaeophyta) were grown in enriched media at a range of nitrate concentrations and temperatures of 18 and 20°C. Specific growth rates and nitrate concentrations showed a hyperbolic relationship, with growth saturation occurring above 20 μM NO3−. Maximum growth rates occurred at 18°C and 20 μM NO3−.
