Actin and myosin are ubiquitous proteins that are responsible for cell motility. Since nonmuscle actin was first discovered in the plasmodium of Physarum polycephalum (Hatano and Oosawa 1966) and an elegant technique to identify microfilaments composed of F-actin in situ was advanced by Ishikawa (Ishikawa et al. 1969), there have been a number of reports showing the existence of actin and myosin in nonmuscle cells (for review, see Korn 1978).
