Medical oncology has been established as a new subspecialty of internal medicine. To define the scope of training programs in medical oncology, proposals have been made to aid in establishing new programs or to standardize existing programs and to provide young physicians seeking training in this field with guidelines for assessing the contents of a training program. Medical oncology encompasses a broad aspect of medicine and requires a firm foundation in the principles of internal medicine. Certification in medical oncology is a commitment to continuing reassessment of competency. The medical oncologist, as an advocate of the cancer patient, has the opportunity to integrate many scientific skills to control, or even cure, neoplastic diseases.
