2-Deoxy-D-galactitol, C 6 H 14 O 5 , was prepared by reduction of 2-deoxy-D-galactose with sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) and crystallized from aqueous solution. Colorless block-shaped crystals suitable for single-crystal X-ray diffraction were obtained. The title compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P 1, with two crystallographically independent molecules in the asymmetric unit. In the crystal, the molecules are linked by O—H...O hydrogen bonds, forming a three-dimensional hydrogen-bonded network.
