Self-ventilated cooling systems are a critical component of commuter train traction motors. In order to resolve contamination, noise, and over-heating issues, this paper proposes a totally enclosed permanent magnet synchronous motors. Results from temperature rise tests, noise measurements, and energy consumption calculations are reported. They indicate that the rise in temperature remained within limits, the noise level decreased ten decibels when compared with conventional motors, and the energy consumption was reduced by ten percent. This proposed traction motor is shown to be quiet, maintenance-free, and energy-saving, and has close to the same size and power-to-weight ratio as that of a conventional self-ventilated induction motor.
