Eight cases of human phaeohyphomycosis of the brain are described. All were in patients from countries in the Middle East and in all the causative fungus was considered to belong to an underscribed taxon, named here as Ramichloridium mackenziei sp. nov. Infection in all cases involved abscess formation, and in six cases branching hyphae were seen in aspirated pus. R. mackenziei, like other members of the genus, produces unicellular conidia holoblastically on a sympodially proliferating axis, but is characterized by relatively reduced differentiation of the conidiogenous apparatus and few conidia per axis.
