S H Lin et al 1984 Orlando: Academic x + 260 pp price £41.50 ISBN 0 12 450520 1 The advantages of multiphoton absorption spectroscopy, viz access to states forbidden by one-photon processes, lack of need for a short wavelength source, the possibility of Doppler suppression, the availability of state-symmetry information, the ability to study resonance and vibronic effects etc, have been known for a long time (conceptually at least since the 1931 work of Goppaert-Meyer). It was only with the development of the narrow linewidth, tunable, moderate power dye-laser that it became a practical possibility.
