Dog common carotid arteries have been perfused, at low transmural pressure, in special rigs, with serum containing 14C-4-cholesterol in the lipoprotein moiety. The magnitude and spatial invariance of the uptake of the label by the artery wall are inconsistent with boundary layer controlled diffusion. The uptake is dependent on the level of the wall shear, implying that it is the uptake process at the blood:wall interface which is the rate-limiting step in the total transport.
