Insertion of lithium in EuIII0.33Zr2(PO4)3 having NZP structure, using n-butyllithium, has allowed a mixed valent phosphate Li0.1EuII0.1EuIII0.23Zr2(PO4)3 to be synthesized. The presence of mixed valent Eu gave rise to PL emission in the blue-green (Eu2+) and red (Eu3+) regions under 393 nm excitation with the chromaticity coordinates close to ideal white light.
