The development is described of a computer analysis for sector shaped tilting pad thrust bearings, in which the coupled elasticity, Reynolds, and energy equations are solved simultaneously. Allowance is made for a diabatic film, thermal distortion of the pad, and hot oil carry over between pads. The program is general in nature and intended for use primarily as a trouble shooting tool, initially to indicate or confirm modes of failure and then to evaluate the effectiveness of a number of possible remedial actions. Theoretical predictions are compared with two sets of published experimental results. As an exercise, the effects of varying basic parameters, such as pivot position, button support, and the number of pads, are investigated.
