Astaxanthin fraction obtained from aquatic animals was separated into its optical isomers, (3S, 3'S)-astaxanthin (1), (3S, 3'R; meso)-astaxanthin (2), and (3R, 3'R)-astaxanthin (3) in the free forms by HPLC on optical resolution column. The occurrence of enantiomeric and meso-astaxanthin in the thirty-seven species of aquatic animals was reported.
