The Global Prison Trends 2022 report, published on May 11, flags the continuing global failure to reduce prison populations. Governments have been frequently resorting to unnecessary overincarceration under the illusion of solving social problems. But this short-sightedness drives prison overcrowding and poses immense challenges for the healthcare and social reintegration of prisoners. Today, the global prison population is at an all-time high, with several prison systems struggling to even meet the basic needs of prisoners.
