The Cognitive Curriculum for Young Children (CCYC) was designed to stimulate the congnitive development and intrinsic motivation of young at-risk and handicapped children and to prevent special education placement. Drawing on ideas from Piaget and Vygotsky, and especially from Feuerstein, CCYC uses a mediational teaching style. This teacher-directed curriculum emphasizes planning, small group cognitive instruction, large group cognitive experience, and summation of major activities. Evaluation of its effectiveness showed significant gains in general cognitive development following one school year of the curriculum.
