In Mississippi, the tarnished plant bug (TPB) is the most economically important insect pest impacting cotton. A foliar efficacy trial was conducted on a grower field near Glendora, MS, to evaluate the efficacy of various selected insecticides on tarnished plant bug. Plot size was four rows by 40 feet long on 38-inch rows, arranged in a randomized complete block design with 4 replications. Insecticides were applied with a tractor-mounted sprayer delivering 10 GPA at 60 PSI through TX-6 Hollow Cone nozzles with 2 per row. TPB densities were determined by using a black drop cloth 5 row feet in length, from the center 2 rows of each plot, for a total of ten row feet per plot. Samples were taken 4, 6, 11, and 17 days after treatment (DAT). Data were analyzed with ANOVA and means were separated using a Fisher’s Protected LSD (P < 0.05). TPB levels in the untreated check ranged from 50.3 to 12.5 per 10 row feet at 4 and 11 DAT, respectively (Table 1). At 4 and 6 DAT, all treatments reduced TPB densities when compared with the untreated check. At 4 DAT, Vydate, Orthene, Bidrin, and Diamond all provided the greatest level of control, but were not different than Couraze + Orthene or Brigade + Orthene. At 6 DAT, Vydate, Orthene, Brigade + Orthene, Bidrin, and Diamond all provided the highest level of control, but were no different than Centric, Orthene, Couraze + Orthene, and Carbine. At 17 DAT, Transform and Carbine provided the greatest control of TPB, but were no different than the untreated check.1 Effect of select insecticides on tarnished plant bug control in 2022 near Glendora, MS. Means within a column sharing the same letter are not significantly different (LSD; P > 0.05). aoz/acre. bfl oz/acre. clb/acre.
