Efficacy of common insecticides to control tarnished plant bugs in cotton, 2021

In the 2021 growing season, a tarnished plant bug (TPB) trial was conducted to test the efficacy of 9 insecticide treatments along with an untreated check. The trial was located in Glendora, MS, and was implemented as a randomized complete block design with 4 replications. Treatments were 4 rows wide by 40 feet long on 38-inch centers. Treatments were applied when TPB reached threshold according to the Mississippi State University Insect Control Guide for Agronomic Crops. Treatments were applied with a self-propelled sprayer that was calibrated to 10 GPA using TX 6 Hollow Cone nozzles with a 19-inch nozzle spacing. Applications were made on 26 July and evaluated at 3 days after treatment (DAT), 8 DAT, 10 DAT, and 14 DAT. Treatment evaluations were made using a black drop cloth, which consist of 5 row feet per drop. The drop cloth was used in the center 2 rows to collect 2 samples per plot for a total of 10 row feet per plot sampled. The TPB totals consist of adults and nymphs. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, and means were separated using Fisher’s Protected LSD (P ≤ 0.05). At 3 DAT, all treatments lowered TPB populations compared to the untreated check (Table 1). Brigade plus Orthene, Bidrin, Orthene, and Transform had resulted in lower numbers of plant bugs compared with Couraze Max or Carbine. At 8 DAT, again all treatments lowered populations below that in the untreated check. Transform, Centric, Vydate, Orthene, Brigade plus Orthene, and Diamond all had significantly lowered population compared with Bidrin and Carbine. There was no difference between Couraze Max and all other insecticide treatments except for the Transform treatments. At 10 DAT, all treatments except Couraze Max significantly lowered TPB populations compared to the untreated control (Table 1). Transform provide better control of TPB than Vydate, Bidrin, and Carbine. There were no differences between Centric, Vydate, Orthene, Orthene plus Brigade, Bidrin, Carbine, and Diamond. By 14 DAT, Vydate, Bidrin, Couraze Max, and Carbine were not different from the untreated check.
