The localization of Ag-NOR proteins in full-grown oocytes and preimplantation embryos of mice was examined. The Ag-NOR proteins were detected in the nucleolar fibrillar centers and dense fibrillar components of full-grown oocytes, in the small patches associating with the condensed chromosomes of postzygotic one-cell embryos undergoing second maturation division, in the nucleolar fibrillar centers of interphase one-cell and two-cell embryos, and also in the nucleolar fibrillar centers and dense fibrillar components of four-cell embryos. These results suggest that the Ag-NOR proteins may have no direct correlation with a cellular activity of ribosomal RNA synthesis.
