MRI was prone to overstaging of disease. Discrepancies between MRI and pathologic findings were mainly caused by misinterpretation of fibrosis. Inflammatory cell infiltration, pure mucin, edematous mucosa and submucosa adjacent to the tumor, and muscularis propria could also be misinterpreted as residual tumor.
