One problem facing the field of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is inconsistent terminology. This may be due in part to the international and transdisciplinary nature of the field. Perhaps this inconsistency is most apparent when one considers the many terms that are used to describe iconicity. This paper discusses the various terms that have been used to describe this variable and proposes the adoption of a consistent terminology for iconicity. Further discussion is provided on other inconsistencies in terminology that have arisen in recent years.
