Sixteen patients who were undergoing total replacement of the hip were given 1 g cephaloridine by intravenous injection immediately after the induction of anaesthesia. Renal function was normal in all cases. The concentrations of antibiotic in synovial fluid, synovial capsule and head of the femur were measured and compared with the corresponding serum concentrations. Therapeutic levels of cephaloridine were achieved in the bone and associated tissues, indicating that the antibiotic should prove a useful form of prophylaxis for patients undergoing this type of operation
