A definition of school social work practice was developed from opinions expressed by professional school social workers about the relative importance of different parts of their work for the attainment of social work goals within a public school setting. It is a matter of concern that this definition strongly suggests the main body of tasks and goals in school social work is not attuned to the urgent problems of school children and youth today. Nor does it appear to provide a promising basis for experimentation in assigning responsibilities to social work staff with different levels of education.
