Although probation continues to serve as the foundation for our correctional system, few empirical studies have been undertaken to study probation workers. As a result, the picture is less than clear about what probation employees regard as their primary tasks, and the strategies they believe will enable them to accomplish these tasks. Analyzing data collected from 206 probation officers in a large southwestern state, this paper begins by examining the work ideologies of juvenile versus adult probation officers. The paper goes on to explore and identify determinants of probation officers' professional orientation. Findings from the study are discussed, along with implications for future research in this area.
