Abstact A total of 170 arthropods were collected from 249 kilograms of snow from 11 major snowfalls. The fauna included 88 eriophyoid mites, 75 mites in other groups, 5 scale crawlers, 1 first instar larval hymenopteran and 1 tardigrade. Several mites were alive when trapped. Miteswere also recovered from the upper layer of heavy snowfall 56 cm thick. These results indicate that many mites, especially eriophyoid mites, possess extraordinary potential for winter and long-distance aerial dispersal.
