N-3 PUFAs may improve PCOS complications via metabolic, hormonal, and endothelial mechanisms.
Why the study?
Studies investigating dietary intake of n-3 PUFAs in PCOS are limited, and data on their metabolic and hormonal effects remain scarce.
Do N-3 fatty acids improve complications in patients with PCOS?
Do N-3 fatty acids improve complications in patients with PCOS?
Omega-3 fatty acids are a promising agent for relieving PCOS complications, but more trials are needed to clarify their metabolic and hormonal effects.
-3 PUFAs are a promising agent in relieving complications associated with PCOS. Although most of the studies in patients with PCOS reported an improvement in most complications after administration of omega-3 supplements, there is a distinct dearth of studies investigating the dietary intake of these types of fatty acids. Moreover, favorable effects regarding the improvement of dyslipidemia, regulation of adipokines, regulation of hormonal factors and enhancement of endothelial function are limited. Therefore, more trials are warranted to investigate palatable mechanisms for clarifying the metabolic and hormonal effects of these agents in PCOS.

Salek et al. (2019) conducted a review in Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3) was evaluated. N-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may exert beneficial effects on PCOS complications through multiple mechanisms including anti-obesity, glycemic and hormonal hemostasis, anti-inflammatory, regulation of adipokine production, and enhancement of endothelial function.
