Little research exists on the dynamics of relationships within the extended family after divorce and remarriage. Several related methodological/conceptual issues are presented in explanation of this gap in research: the persistence of a nuclear mythology surrounding the family, differences in the focus of sociological and psychological research, and the neglect of research on qualitative aspects of family interactions. On the basis of the existing limited research and clinical data. an account is given of general and specific dynamic patterns within post-divorce and post-remarriage interactions in the extended family.
