Bismaleimides undergo successive 2 + 2 and 2 + 4 cycloadditions to alkylbenzenes to form polyimides. For the series toluene, ethylbenzene, cumene, tert‐butylbenzene, highest yields of polymer are obtained with toluene and tert‐butylbenzene with three different bismaleimides. This is explained in terms of inductive and steric effects of the alkyl substituents.
