The phenomenological nonlinear theory of magnetoelasticity (ME) is applied in order to explain the deviation of the shear-strain-related ME coupling constant B₂, obtained from cantilever-bending-beam experiments on epitaxial films, from the respective bulk value. A relation between an effective ME coupling constant, proposed to interpret the measured data, and second-order ME coupling constants, following from the symmetry properties, is derived. A calculational method for the shear-strain-related ME quantities is given as an extension to a previously developed method for calculation of the tensile-strain-related ME quantities. The relevant properties of bcc Fe, fcc Co, and fcc Ni are calculated ab initio.
