(±)-Xanthorrhoein has been synthesised from 3-hydroxynaphthalic anhydride in ten steps. It melts at a higher temperature than (+)-xanthorrhoein, but its infrared, ultraviolet, and proton magnetic resonance spectra are identical with those of the natural product.
