Key result
Neiguan acupoint stimulation boosts exercise SV and CO while accelerating post-exercise HR and SBP recovery.
Why the study?
The effects of electroacupuncture at Neiguan acupoints on cardiac pump function during rest, exercise, and recovery in endurance-trained athletes were not well understood.
Does electroacupuncture at Neiguan acupoints improve cardiac pump function during exercise and recovery in endurance-trained athletes?
Does electroacupuncture at Neiguan acupoints improve cardiac pump function during exercise and recovery in endurance-trained athletes?
Electroacupuncture at Neiguan acupoints may enhance cardiac pump function during exercise and accelerate hemodynamic recovery in endurance-trained athletes.
May aid post-exercise cardiac recovery in endurance athletes; hypothesis-generating and should not yet change practice.

Yi Syuu (1999) studied Healthy endurance-trained athletes (n=20). Electrical stimulation of Neiguan acupoints vs. No stimulation (control condition) was evaluated on Cardiac pump function (Stroke Volume and Cardiac Output) during exercise and recovery (p=<0.05). Electrical stimulation of Neiguan acupoints significantly increased stroke volume and cardiac output during submaximal exercise and accelerated the recovery of heart rate and systolic blood pressure after exercise.
