SUMMARY The erythrocytes of stored blood form aggregates after mixing the blood with isotonic glucose solution. These “clumps” may be dangerous if they persist in the circulation after the infusion of the blood/glucose mixture. The aggregation tendency was examined under different conditions, comprising changes in the time after the mixing, the temperature and the degree of dilution. The formation of aggregates occurred almost instantaneously; it decreased with rise in temperature and was most pronounced at low concentrations of blood. The aggregates were shaken with human plasma or saline and found to be non‐persistent. It is concluded that the erythrocyte aggregates formed in blood/glucose mixtures are dispersable.
