Nanocrystalline hexagonal boron nitride (h‐BN) nanoparticles were synthesized from boric acid and urea by two‐stage thermal treatment and dispersed in automatic transmission fluid (ATF) DEXRON III using sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Structural characterization confirmed crystalline h‐BN with a particle size of 5.4 ± 1.2 nm and d (0 0 2) = 0.332 nm. Increasing h‐BN concentration from 0.03 to 0.06 wt.% increased hydrodynamic aggregate size from 10–20 to 1–2 µm, decreased the absolute zeta potential from 35–45 to 8–15 mV, and increased viscosity. The 0.03 wt.% dispersion showed the most favorable colloidal stability and rheological behavior.
