The problem of cyclic fracture resulting in brittle fatigue striations is discussed. Crack arrest markings, including brittle striations, are shown for 2024-T3 and 7075-T6 aluminum alloys, mild steel, and Ti-2.5 Cu fatigued in various environments. Interpretation of the results leads to a rationale for the formation of brittle striations in high strength aluminum alloys.
