The yield and composition of Japanese peppermint (Mentha arvensis L.) essential oil obtained by solvent-free microwave extraction were determined and compared with those obtained by traditional hydrodistillation. The essential oil was obtained in 0.88-0.95 % yield by treatment at 100-500 W for 20-90 min, and these yields are similar to those obtained by hydrodistillation. Thus, solvent-free microwave extraction is a suitable distillation method for the extraction of essential oils from Japanese peppermint.
