Various methods have been used to characterize the water distribution present in waste sludge samples. This study investigated constant temperature (35°C) drying and dilatometric techniques for quantifying the bound water content of sludges. Preference was stated for the use of dilatometric methods. Bound water content decreased following polymer or freeze‐thaw conditioning of waste chemical and biological sludges. Also, mechanical dewatering produced a significant decrease in bound water content and corresponding increase in dewatered cake solids concentration. Interstitial water was found to have a key role in defining dewatered cake solids concentrations.
