Key result
Higher day 30 γδ T cells linked to ~58% better leukaemia-free survival in MRD+ AML.
Why the study?
Minimal residual disease prior to allogeneic stem cell transplantation in AML is a poor risk factor for outcome, and the role of γδ T cell reconstitution in overcoming this risk was investigated.
Population
202 AML patients undergoing allo-SCT with MRD assessment
Comparison
Higher versus lower than median γδ T cell levels post-transplant in MRD+ patients
Design
Cohort study with flow cytometry immune reconstitution analysis
Follow-up
Median 28 months (range 3-59)

Klyuchnikov et al. (2021) conducted a cohort in Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (n=202). Higher than median level of γδ T cells post-transplant vs. Lower than median level of γδ T cells was evaluated on Leukaemia-free survival (HR 0.42, p=0.007). Higher than median levels of γδ T cells on day +30 post-transplant in MRD+ AML patients significantly improved leukaemia-free survival (HR 0.42, p=0.007).
