Tree-ring analysis in geomorphology (dendrogeomorphology) can be incorporated into a number of undergraduate courses to reveal methods for reconstructing the history of a variety of geomorphic processes, and to illustrate principles of recurrence interval and frequency vs. magnitude of processes. Geomorphic processes affect tree growth in a variety of ways which produce datable responses in annual tree rings. Sampling of affected trees by sawing or coring allows the extraction of chronological data which can be used, through the application of standard dating techniques, to determine the history of occurrence of a given geomorphic process. Such analysis is especially useful and necessary in more remote areas where little or no historic data exist, and where it can assist in hazard planning.
