The corrosion-promotion activity of graphene is inhibited when graphene is encapsulated in insulating SiO 2 because SiO 2 can act as a spacer isolating graphene from the metal substrate so as to prevent graphene–metal micro-galvanic corrosion. Incorporating rGO@SiO 2 nanosheets into a polymer coating also greatly enhances the corrosion resistance of the coating.
