In this paper the electro-optical theory of valence is reanalyzed and its advantages are described with respect to other methods developed for the study of the absorption intensities in the infrared spectra. A particular attention is paid to the transferability of electro-optical parameters to other molecules (isotopic derivatives or chemically similar molecules).
