Legal use of erythromycin to control bacterial kidney disease in salmonid aquaculture is restricted in the United States to investigational new animal drug (INAD) permits. In 1992, the University of Idaho expanded sponsorship of two INAD permits to encompass field trials of erythromycin as a feed additive and injectable drug at over 100 sites in the Pacific Northwest. The organizational structure devised for conducting these field trials and the variables tested are presented in this paper.
