Key result
Older age and being overweight are linked to uncontrolled hypertension in ~57% of hypertensive adults.
Why the study?
Uncontrolled hypertension among adult hypertensive patients remains unclear and has been inadequately studied in Ethiopia, particularly in the study area.
Cross-Sectional (n=300)
Yes
Uncontrolled hypertension is highly prevalent (56.7%) among treated adults in Ethiopia, driven by older age, overweight, and poor awareness of complications.
Although blood pressure control has tremendous public health benefit, and has effective treatments, the global rate of uncontrolled blood pressure remains high. In sub-Saharan Africa including Ethiopia uncontrolled blood pressure resulted in a significant morbidity and mortality. Unfortunately, uncontrolled hypertension among adult hypertensive patients remains unclear and has been inadequately studied in Ethiopia, in the study area in particular.

Lemessa et al. (2021) conducted a cross-sectional in Hypertension (n=300). Older age (≥ 50 years) vs. Younger age (24-34 years) was evaluated on Uncontrolled hypertension (AOR 7.94, 95% CI 2.5-19.12, p=0.001). Uncontrolled hypertension was present in 56.7% of adult hypertensive patients and was significantly associated with older age (AOR 7.94), being overweight (AOR 2.3), and lacking awareness of complications (AOR 2.04).
