Retrospective cohort study reveals colorectal cancer risk patterns in isolated small intestinal Crohn’s disease, highlighting the need for refined cancer surveillance guidelines.
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), encompassing Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), is associated with an elevated risk of colorectal cancer (CRC), driven by chronic inflammation and dysplasia.1 Among patients with CD, this risk is well-established in those with colonic involvement, where chronic inflammation of the large intestine is a key driver of carcinogenesis.2 In contrast, while small intestine CD is a recognized risk factor for small bowel adenocarcinoma, its association with CRC remains less clear.
