Respiration by detached fine roots of tree seedlings collected in March and April near Durham, N. C., was determined by the polarographic method at 17° and 28°C. Oxygen depletion in air-saturated water ranged from 5 to 23 μg of O 2 per gram of root dry weight permin and averaged 14. Midwinter values for loblolly pine seedlings growing in the greenhouse were over 3½ times as high as those for similar seedlings in the field. Forest Sci. 17:492-493.
