The authors studied the histologic effects of Conray 60%, Conray 400, Hyp aque 50% and Renografin-60 injected into the peritoneal cavities of rats. All media produced an acute inflammatory response which was minimal at Ghours, peaked at 48 hours, and almost completely subsided by 120 hours. Residual inflammation was confined to focal areas at 120 hours. Hypaque 50% and Renografin-GO were associated with the least cellular reaction ; Conray 60% was intermediate; and Conray-400 the greatest . This temporary peritoneal reacti on should not deter use of the media in inguinal herniography.
