Microcrystals of Co, Fe and a Co-Fe alloy were pulled from their melts using the pedestal growth method with laser heating. The crystals were grown reproducibly with either constant diameter or a conical shape by controlling the laser power and the speed of the feed rod. The as-grown crystals were qualitatively characterized by X-ray techniques. The crystals of Co and Fe were found to be single and of high quality, while the Co-Fe alloys were single but of low quality. The effect of phase transformations on crystal quality is discussed.
