We have investigated high elastic gels which can be formed from biphasic systems of hydrocarbon, water and surfactant. These new phases contain up to 99% hydrocarbon, but there exists a well defined upper limit for the incorporation of excess oil. – The hydrocarbon gels exhibit strong elastic properties which can be described by a frequency independent static shear modulus. The influence of the surfactant concentration, the surfactant chainlength and the volume fraction of hydrocarbon on the modulus was systematically investigated. The experimental data are in fairly good agreement with theoretical models which have been derived for such hydrocarbon rich gels.
