Within the sciences, a consensus approach to knowledge is usually adopted. The consensus approach means that many theories in these subjects are presented as unquestionable truths; this is even the case with many university level science courses. Although critical evaluation of data is required within the sciences, this usually takes place within the confines of existing theoretical models, and a wider critique of the methodology and aims of science is not generally encouraged. All those involved in science, particularly those involved in university science education, need to critically examine science and its methodologies, and to adopt a more critical approach to science education that includes an articulation of hidden assumptions and consideration of the philosophical and ethical issues raised by science.
