Experimental study demonstrates the isolation of stable oxygen-deficient reduced dodecamolybdophosphate anions, indicating structural preservation despite bridging oxygen loss.
By a reaction of [n-Bu4N]3[PMo(VI)12O40] with PPh3 in acetonitrile, reduced forms, [n-Bu4N]3[PMo(VI)12−2xMo(V)2xO40−x] (x = 1, 2, 3), were isolated and characterized by X-ray diffractiometry, IR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. No decomposition took place on the anion structure of the reduced compounds, although three of the bridging oxygen atoms in the Mo–O–Mo bonds were eliminated.
