Through magic-angle spinning of fused glass ampoules containing dehydrated zeolites or related catalysts under vacuum, highly resolved solid-state proton magnetic resonance spectra can be obtained which allow a quantitative determination of both the concentration and strength of acidity of Brönsted-acid sites. The theoretical background of this new method is outlined and after a comparison with i.r. spectroscopy, results of a study are presented which relate the catalytic activity of various catalysts quantitatively with the concentration and the strength of acidity of their Brönsted-acid sites.
