Absolute conˆguration determination of chiral molecules in gas phase is a challenging subject for high resolution molecular spectroscopy. The electric dipole moment of a chiral molecule does not vanish by symmetry. The product m a ・m b ・m c , i.e. the product of the projections of the dipole moment onto the three molecule-ˆxed axes, does not vanish by symmetry either. There is a simple relation between the dipole moment of the R-and S-enantiomers:Because the dipole moment determination is in principle possible by high resolution spectroscopy, this relation may be used in the future as a simple but decisive criterion to determine the absolute conˆguration. The theoretical background and the recent progress in experiments on this subject are presented.
