Although orthopedic problems predominate, gastrointestinal problems are frequent. Symptoms of abdominal cramping, rectal urgency, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and rectal bleeding certainly occur (1-4), and occult gastrointestinal bleeding has been well described (5-9). The actual cause of these disorders is unknown; however, and we used endoscopy to evaluate prospectively the source of gastrointestinal blood loss in marathon runners.Study Design and MethodsOf 9000 runners in the 1988 Chicago Marathon, 103 volunteered to participate in the study.
