The higher order shear deformation plate‐bending theory introduced by Reddy and others is used as a basis for the development of two new finite elements. This higher order theory allows a parabolic distribution of transverse shear strains through the plate thickness. Solutions obtained using the new elements are compared with exact closed‐form solutions based on three‐dimensional, first and higher order shear deformation plate bending theories.
